Gene Wolfe Interview With National Review Online

Check this link out to hear Roman Catholic sci-fi writer talk with NRO about a "best of" collection recently published.

Gene Wolfe is a huge favorite of mine...I'm currently reading Pirate Freedom, which you can buy on the blog post below. Pirate Freedom is a time-travel story of one man who is both a Catholic priest in the future and a pirate captain in the 17th century. And of course, since it's Gene Wolfe, it's a story of Christian salvation. Wonderful.

Pirate Freedom

by Gene Wolfe
published by New York : Tor, c2007.
ISBN:0765318784 ISBN-13:9780765318787
Wolfe's very fine new novel is the story of the two lives of Father Christopher, a Catholic priest in the contemporary world and a successful pirate on the Spanish Main three centuries earlier. As always, Wolfe has done his homework, as the roster of famous pirates to whom the book is dedicated immediately indicates. Piratical Christopher certainly takes advantage of his chosen career to free himself of many of the restrictions of his era, though he did also take a wife and father a child, both of whom he lost in his passage to the future. At the end of a superlatively well-done sea story, the modern-day priest is looking for a way back to his original self, to his family, and to the treasure that, however ill-gotten, he regards as his. Fans of fantasy, of Wolfe, and of sea stories should all beat paths to anywhere this yarn is on the shelf.

Return from Atlanta Homeschooling Conference

Whew...what a trip. Kevin Brooks and I went down to Atlanta with some 8,000 books, and sold like nobody's business (nobody's business but ours!). We slammed those 8,000 books onto the truck on Wednesday, slammed them out Thursday, sold them like crazy Friday and Saturday, slammed them back on Saturday night, and slammed them out Sunday afternoon.

I'm very sore.

Thanks to all the mamas, papas, and kids who made it such a great conference!

PlunderChess

PlunderChess™ is traditional chess with a fun, novel twist. In its simplest definition, it is chess that allows each player the ability to strengthen their chessmen as the game is played out. This strengthening comes as the chessmen capture and “plunder” additional moving capabilities directly from their opponent’s pieces. For example, if a bishop captures a rook, the capturing bishop may attach to itself a “rook vest” that now empowers it to move as a rook on one future move whenever it chooses. It is this unique “plundering” feature that makes PlunderChess™ a highly addictive, “got-to-play-more” game!
